The sustainable traditional hotel in the middle of the city of Lucerne
The hotel Schweizerhof Luzern proves that a luxurious traditional establishment in the heart of the city can also be committed to sustainability. After all, the magnificent view of lake Lucerne and the mountains should remain just as unspoilt for a long time to come - and something has to be done to ensure this. As a member of various projects such as "Food Save Lucerne", the five-star hotel relies on a sustainable concept in the kitchen. Locally sourced and seasonal produce is the order of the day! The herbs are grown in VILLA Schweizerhof's own garden, the freshwater fish originates from the surrounding waters, and most of the meat and dairy products are supplied by local farmers. These in turn receive the leftover bread from the Lucerne festival hotel, which makes their animals happy. The organic waste is turned into biogas and used as an energy resource.
Empty champagne bottles don't just end up in the rubbish here, but are given a second life. In collaboration with the Lucerne-based design label "Fidea Design", they are turned into unique storage jars: jewellery, dried fruit, spice mixtures or general everyday objects find a place in these jars which were inspired by an idea of the Swiss product designer Rahel Mor.
Special efforts are made with regard to social issues as well. There are currently around 25 apprentices at work, with eight to twelve new ones joining every year. As a training and partner company of "La Capriola", the hotel Schweizerhof Luzern gives young people with a need for support an opportunity: the foundation helps to ensure that those with special needs are trained as qualified professionals in the hotel and catering industry as well as in old people's homes. In addition, Ukrainians who have fled their home country are given the opportunity to attend a ten-week training course to prepare them for the Swiss hospitality industry. A lot is being done for employees in general: the hotel operates an employee council which is run by volunteers from all departments and age groups – and this without the management. By means of a recognition system, employees are also specially rewarded after months of successful work. Besides, the hotel Schweizerhof generously supports all employees in their training and further education and offers its staff a number of benefits such as festival tickets or public transport subsidies. In the area of corporate social responsibility, the establishment is exemplary too and supports numerous local sports clubs, music ensembles and charitable organisations, such as the "Schweizer Tafel" (Swiss food bank) or non-profit organisations like "Wasser für Wasser" (water for water) and "SapoCycle".
The ISO 14001 certified hotel has achieved the CO2 reduction path in 2022, undercutting it by 11.7 tonnes. With the "Review Forest" membership, the hotel plants a tree in a reforestation project for every review received in the name of the person who submitted it.
