Hotel Landgasthof Staila 

Strong solidarity with the local valley

Any list of sustainability pioneers in the Swiss hotel industry has to include the Hotel Landgasthof Staila. Since as long ago as 1995, the hotel's roof has been equipped with solar cells that generate hot water for the property. From check-in all the way through to departure, guests experience the commitment to sustainability that is a key element of this hotel's identity. As a family-run business that has catered to guests' wellbeing across many generations, the Staila maintains strong solidarity with the Val Müstair. The operators obtain everything they possibly can from suppliers in the local valley and the surrounding region. The valley cheese factory and the own slaughterhouse make it possible. Tradespeople and employees from the region are also given priority. The Swiss stone pinewood in the refurbished rooms comes from the adjacent forest. 

And everything on the tables originates from the region as well: table decorations are seasonal and natural, with Swiss stone pine cones and sprigs in winter, and bouquets from the hotel's own flower garden in summer. Fresh herbs from the Staila's own garden also feature in the dishes served at table. The Staila Fuldera takes part in the cooking day organised each year by GILDE, the guild of established Swiss restaurateurs. Proceeds are donated to the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Val Müstair homecare association (Spitex). 

The hotel tries to prevent food waste as much as possible. In the hotel's own compost, all green waste from the kitchen is composted into soil and reused in the hotel's own garden. A charging station for electric cars is placed at the disposal of the hotel's guests, as well as two e-bikes.
