Hotel Krone Churwalden 

Committed to sustainability from the outset

Hotel Krone is situated in a peaceful location in the heart of the village of Churwalden, and sustainability has been a priority since the design stage. The establishment, which celebrated its opening in December 2022, was planned with sustainability in mind right from the start, and this has been taken into account in all aspects. It was built according to the Minergie 2018 standard and the electricity is sourced regionally, mostly from hydropower. Care is taken to consume less energy in the daily routines, and energy-saving lamps are used in all rooms. A centrally operated wood chip heating system generates remote heat for heating and hot water.

Regional produce is the order of the day at Hotel Krone. Food, drinks and other products are sourced locally. Swiss producers are consistently selected whose entire added value chain is in Switzerland. The honey at the breakfast buffet comes from the hotel’s own bee colonies, which were rented from the Heinzenberg apiary, the beef comes from organic farmers in Lenzerheide, and the chicken breast is delivered from the organic farm in Chur. Plastic is avoided wherever possible, valuable materials are recycled and waste is separated. Refillable containers with products made from 100 percent biodegradable ingredients and natural fragrances are to be found in the bathrooms. Steam is used for cleaning, based on the conscious decision not to use chemicals. Guests are encouraged to bring their own bathrobe and slippers.

Social integration is an important part of the hotel’s operations. The recently opened Hotel Krone is in the early stages of setting up an apprenticeship programme. Further training courses on a wide variety of topics are carried out weekly by the hotel director, with the aim of raising awareness of sustainability in this area. High-standard accommodation for employees is available in Churwalden and the surrounding area. Preference is also given to people from the region when selecting employees.
