The Kartause Ittingen is self-sufficient in every respect. The complex includes its own working farm where crops are cultivated, livestock are bred and wine is grown; with its own orchard, nursery, butchery, farmhouse cheese dairy, fish farm and wood oven bakery, the farm manufactures over 200 products directly on site. Thanks to these facilities, the Charterhouse can offer dishes that originate entirely from its own production. In a few cases where this is impossible, preference is given to producers within a radius of 5 to 10 kilometers.

The residential facility and workshop for assisted employees with mental or cognitive disabilities provides 30 assisted living places and 60 sheltered workplaces. The Kartause Ittingen also trains around 20 apprentices in nine professions. Over 50 vocations are represented in the complex as a whole.

The Kartause – which is car-free – has a wood chip heating system that saves about 166,000 liters of heating oil every year. About 10% of the power supply is self-generated by the establishment’s own photovoltaic system. From the moment they check in until their departure, guests can therefore rest assured that they are staying in a hotel that is sustainable in every respect.
